By now, we all know that protecting your skin from the sun is essential. But did you also know that you have to protect your hair and scalp as well? Well it's true! Your hair and scalp need just as much protection from the sun as the rest of your body does.
Technically speaking, your hair doesn't really get sun-burned in the traditional sense. However, according to The Cleveland Clinic, sunlight can have the same effect on your hair as bleach does. And just like bleach, the suns rays can damage the outer layer of your hair, called the cuticle, and deplete its keratin levels, which is your hair's natural protein. This leads to dryness and breakage, again, just like bleaching your hair.

In part 1 of Say No to Fast Fashion, we told you what fast fashion was and how we are doing our part to stop it. What is the point of shedding light on a problem without offering a solution? Now it's time to put a positive spin on this issue and show how YOU can help make a difference. Fast fashion is a cycle and we can't expect the fast fashion retailers to put a stop to it. What we can do is make the effort to be more mindful of our choices.
Okay so we mentioned in Part 1 that only 15% of garments actually make their way to consignment stores. Those that are donated can't be resold because of the condition they are in. But sometimes it is still the best way to purge your closet of some things you do not want anymore. So before you donate, take a...
If you were to start asking people on the street if they knew what fast fashion was, you would likely get a variety of different responses. Some people might know exactly what you are talking about and exactly what the ramifications of it are. Some people might have heard of the term or even might have a good guess of what it could mean. The majority of people however have probably never heard of the term fast fashion, despite the fact that nearly everyone these days contributes to its cycle.
What is fast fashion?
So first, let's define fast fashion. We already gave you a little hint: fast fashion is a cycle. Specifically, fast fashion refers to the sped up cycle of fashion that has been created in recent years by increasing consumer demand, and decreasing production time on clothes. To break it down even further, fashion used to only happen...
As a mother and new business owner, I am constantly trying to create balance in my sometimes unbalanced world. Juggling my family life and my new business, especially while it is still in its infancy, is both busy and stressful. With my days starting early and ending late, sleep and rest have become a luxury rather than a necessity. This juggling act is not unique to me, as it is what millions of women face every day. This struggle to find balance and manage stress is affecting all of our overall wellness, including our skin health.
Exercising regularly, eating a balanced meal full of veggies and fruits, and staying out of the sun are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. While these three practices are proven to reduce the signs of skin damage and other forms of aging, the emotions we feel and our overall mental health can have an...
With the Labor Day weekend and the end of summer fast approaching, I took a moment to reflect on everything that has happened this summer and what it has meant for me both professionally and personally. This summer brought with it new beginnings and opportunities, as well as some calm, tranquil moments to reflect on the changes of the past season.
My family and I just returned from the trip of a lifetime to Greece where we visited the historic sights in Athens, soaked in the Santorini sunsets, and enjoyed the authentic, beautiful landscapes of Crete. The genuine people, fresh foods, ancient ruins, architecture, and majestic Mediterranean Sea were all breathtakingly beautiful. Although travel with kids can sometimes be hectic and challenging, I did my best to find moments where I could sit quietly and reflect on what's around me, the gratitude I felt in my heart for the present...
Dr Ali Hendi, Co-Founder of luminora™, was recently interviewed by NBC 4 Washington. In his interview with NBC 4, Dr Ali Hendi spoke about keeping safe from the sun, and skin cancer prevention. It is estimated that one in five Americans will get skin cancer, making it THE most common cancer. Skin cancer cases outnumber breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancer combined!
The most common skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma is slowly growing and rarely fatal. It grows within the skin and typically does not spread (metastasize). The second most common skin cancer is Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which can be fast growing, and has the potential to spread. However, melanoma is the deadliest and accounts for the majority of deaths from skin cancer; luckily it accounts for less than one percent of all skin cancer cases.
UV exposure from the sun, or tanning beds, is a known carcinogen that accounts for the most preventable...
With the launch of luminora™ fast approaching, I’m constantly being asked “how did you make the leap from being an attorney/wife/mother to becoming a fashion designer?” My answer: While design is an important aspect of my new business, and a great creative outlet, it is only a small piece of the puzzle I’m privileged to work on daily. My biggest challenge is finding ways to create a business that is innovative, socially responsible, and serves a greater need for women all over the world. I also don’t see myself as a fashion designer, but rather as an advocate for health conscious women who value freedom, self-expression, authenticity, and cultivation of joy through travel and new experiences.
As a wife to a skin cancer surgeon, with a passion for traveling to beautiful sunny destinations, and a love for exercise and the outdoors, I found that my lifestyle was in conflict with...
