4 Amazing UV Protection Tips For Your Hair [Summer tips]

We all know that protecting your skin from the sun is essential. But did you also know that you have to protect your hair and scalp as well?

Well, it's true!

Your hair and scalp need just as much protection from the sun as the rest of your body does.

Technically speaking, your hair doesn't really get sunburned in the traditional sense.

However, according to The Cleveland Clinic, sunlight can have the same effect on your hair as bleach does. And just like bleach, the suns rays can damage the outer layer of your hair, called the cuticle.

It can deplete its keratin levels, which is your hair's natural protein. This leads to dryness and breakage, again, just like bleaching your hair.

Read on for our best tips on protecting your hair from the sun!

Using products in your hair with sun-protective properties can help save your scalp from the summer sun.

Tip #1: Use Hair and Scalp UV Protection

The place on your head that is the most exposed is the part of your hair since there is obviously no hair covering it.

Protecting it however is as easy as putting a layer of sunscreen on it, just as you would on any other place on your body. Just make sure you also reapply throughout the day as you normally would with the rest of your body.

You can also try out some of the following hair products with UPF protection. They're safe to spray directly on your scalp for protection and won't be too heavy on your hair like normal sunscreen:

  1. Sun Bum Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner 3 in 1
  2. Clarins Sun Care High Protection for Beautiful Body and Hair UVA/UVB 30 Oil Spray
  3. The Original Scalp Screen: Suntan Lotion for the Head with SPF 30 Protection

Tip #2: Masques and Oils and Conditioners, Oh My!

As I said before, most sun damage done to your hair causes it to become dry and damaged.

And you know what is the best kind of UV protection?

prevention! of course.

Before even going outside, use a leave-in conditioner, or oil to nourish and strengthen your hair.

Imagine a hot day in the middle of July, when you are sweating so much the last thing you probably want to do is add oil to an already sweaty head!

especially if you already have naturally greasy hair.

But some oils are actually recommended to help prevent oily hair from happening (We recommend reading this article for more information.)

If you are still apprehensive, try only putting products on the ends of your hair and avoid putting it on your scalp.

Hair masques are also a good idea. Most masks are supposed to be applied to damp hair and rinsed out after a defined amount of time.

So maybe while your pampering your hair, give your skin a little love too with a face mask!

Spending an evening to prep your hair and skin for the summer sun will surely be a night well spent!

Tip #3: Style in Protective Styles

We all know the part in our hair is the spot on your head most at risk.

Wearing your hair in certain styles, like a French braid, or a sleek bun can eliminate any exposed skin on your scalp.

While there is no exact science proving braids protect your hair from the sun, it does decrease the surface area of hair that is exposed to direct sunlight.

If you want a stylish way to cover your hair, try our Venezia Hoodie.

If the French braid isn't really your thing, of course, you can always go with the classic one braid down the back.

But if you want to mix it up you can try Dutch braids, fishtail braids, or even the intricate 4-strand braid if you feel up to the challenge.

Tip #4: Wear a Hat!

It seems a pretty basic tip, But what better way to protect your hair from the sun than by completely shielding it was the sun!

Bonus: For double protection, get a hat with a wide brim that will protect your face as well.

However, this should only supplement the sunscreen you should already be putting on your face.

The more protection, the better!

If you want something a little more fashion forward, may we recommend our very own Venezia Hoodie?

Not only is it stylish, but it is made with our signature temperature regulating fabric so you won't get too hot even though it covers your head.

We think its the best way to make a real statement and stay protected.

We know the summer is supposed to be all about relaxation vibes, but putting in a little extra effort now will help our hair and scalp out in the long run.

We hoped we helped you understand your hair a little better.
